Frequently Asked Questions
Q 1. What is Conscious Sedation ?

Conscious sedation is a technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the Central Nervous System (CNS) enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation. The level of sedation must be such that the patient remains conscious, retains protective reflexes, and is able to understand and to respond to verbal commands.

Q 2. Why Conscious Sedation ?

Recent studies show that anxiety remains high: nearly half of patients who have visited a dentist are classified as having moderate or extreme anxiety. Treating highly anxious patients is also a significant source of stress for dental practitioners, and explains why pain and anxiety management is fundamental to dentistry today. Conscious Sedation is one of the most successful techniques available for dealing with this apprehension, not only in dentistry but in many other medical situations that cause anxiety and fear.

Q 3. Conscious Sedation is safe ?

Yes, Conscious Sedation is completely safe. Since its discovery more than 170 years ago, nitrous oxide (N2O) has been used to provide pain and anxiety relief for patients undergoing surgical procedures with a remarkable safety record. To date, there is no evidence of any mortality associated with N2O/O2 sedation in a dental office when used solely and appropriately.

Q 4. What is PISS ?

Pin Index Safety System (PISS):  A precise configuration of pins and holes that facilitate the connection between N2O and O2 gas cylinders to prevent accidental interchange.

Q 5. What is DISS ?

A system of standardized connections with different diameters exists between N2O and O2 regulators &  pipes connectors to prevent accidental interchange.

Q 6. Oxygen Fail safety System ?

The most important safety feature of the unit is the O2 fail-safe mechanism. It ensures that N2O will not be delivered unless there is O2 flowing to the machine. Because of this feature, the possibility of administering 100% N2O to a patient has been eliminated

Q 7. What is the cost of conscious sedation machine ?

Are you looking for conscious sedation machine with best quality along with promised service? Here it comes. Niox Medi Systems build medical equipment with passion ,that makes us unique from others. Please contact with us,  for best quote for your conscious sedation machine.

Q 8. Is a pulse oximeter necessary for N2O/O2 sedation?

No, not if it is given in concentrations less than 50%. At concentrations greater than 50%, it is recommended to monitor the patient with a pulse oximeter, because these concentrations result in the level of moderate sedation.

Q 9. Do all people experience the same signs and symptoms during N2O/O2 sedation?

No, there are signs and symptoms common to many people such as tingling or feeling light or heavy, but patients react individually to this drug. The goal for all patients is to become relaxed and comfortable.

Q 10. What are the Signs and Symptoms of Appropriate N2O/O2 Sedation ?

Patient is comfortable and relaxed, acknowledges reduced fear and anxiety, aware of surroundings, responds to directions and conversation. Eyes become less active and glazed look appears. Patient may experience: Tingling in extremities and/or near mouth, Heaviness in legs and arms, Body warmth, Light feeling Vasodilation in face and neck, numbness.

Q 11. What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Patients typically report feeling relaxed, calm, and even euphoric. Some may experience mild tingling sensations, a sense of warmth, or a floating feeling. Despite these sensations, patients remain conscious and able to communicate with the provider.

Q 12. Can I Drive After Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Yes, one of the main advantages of nitrous oxide sedation is that it wears off very quickly. Once the procedure is complete and the nitrous oxide has been turned off, patients can usually drive themselves home or return to their normal activities immediately.

Q 13. How Does Nitrous Oxide Compare to Other Sedation Options ?

Nitrous oxide is often preferred for minor procedures because of its rapid onset and quick recovery. Other options include oral sedation (pills), IV sedation, and general anesthesia, which have longer recovery times and may involve more risks. Nitrous oxide is less potent than these other options but provides a more relaxed and comfortable experience.

Q 14. Will Nitrous Oxide Sedation Affect Breathing?

Nitrous oxide is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, so it will not significantly affect your ability to breathe. In fact, it is designed to be used with oxygen, ensuring that you receive adequate oxygen during the procedure. Your breathing will be closely monitored by the healthcare provider.

Q 15. How Does Nitrous Oxide Compare to Oral Sedation ?

While both nitrous oxide and oral sedation are used to help patients relax, nitrous oxide is typically quicker acting, with effects starting within a few minutes and wearing off almost immediately after the gas is turned off. Oral sedation, on the other hand, takes longer to kick in and can have lingering effects for several hours after the procedure.

Q 16. How Do I Know if Nitrous Oxide Is Right for Me ?

Nitrous oxide is a good option for patients who experience mild to moderate anxiety, have dental or medical procedures that don’t require deeper sedation, and who are in generally good health. Your dentist or healthcare provider will assess your medical history, procedure needs, and comfort level to determine if nitrous oxide is appropriate for you

Q 17. What is the Difference Between Nitrous Oxide and General Anesthesia ?

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that helps you relax while remaining conscious and able to respond. General anesthesia, on the other hand, puts you into a state of unconsciousness, where you are completely unaware of your surroundings. Nitrous oxide is often used for minor procedures, while general anesthesia is typically reserved for more invasive or complex surgeries.

Q 18. How Does Nitrous Oxide Help with Dental Anxiety? ?

Nitrous oxide is particularly effective in helping those who feel anxious about dental procedures. It works quickly to induce a sense of calm and reduces feelings of fear or panic, making dental visits more manageable. You remain awake and able to communicate, but your anxiety is significantly reduced.

Q 19. Can I Use Nitrous Oxide If I’m Pregnant ?

Nitrous oxide is generally considered safe for short-term use in pregnancy, especially during labor. However, it is typically avoided in the first trimester unless medically necessary. Always consult your doctor or dentist if you're pregnant to assess whether nitrous oxide is a safe option for you.

Q 20. How Can I Prevent Nitrous Oxide Exposure ?

Ensure that your office or clinical environment has adequate ventilation, including scavenging systems to remove excess nitrous oxide from the air.

Q 21. Does the breathing circuit need to be sterilized after each patient?

Any part of the tubing that is not corrugated can be sterilized. This can be done after each patient, but it is not necessary. Surface disinfection is adequate.

Q 22. Can a person with asthma use N2O/O2 sedation?

Absolutely; asthmatics respond very well to N2O. Keeping a patient with asthma from getting anxious is important.

Q 23. What is the number one potential negative side effect?

Nausea and vomiting. This can occur with an inappropriate administration technique or inadequate monitoring and if inappropriately high concentrations of N2O are used.

Q 24. Do all people experience the same signs and symptoms during N2O/O2 sedation?

No, there are signs and symptoms common to many people such as tingling or feeling light or heavy, but patients react individually to this drug. The goal for all patients is to become relaxed and comfortable.
