Frequently Asked Questions
Q 1. What is Conscious Sedation ?
Conscious sedation is a technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the Central Nervous System (CNS) enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation. The level of sedation must be such that the patient remains conscious, retains protective reflexes, and is able to understand and to respond to verbal commands.
Q 2. Why Conscious Sedation ?
Recent studies show that anxiety remains high: nearly half of patients who have visited a dentist are classified as having moderate or extreme anxiety. Treating highly anxious patients is also a significant source of stress for dental practitioners, and explains why pain and anxiety management is fundamental to dentistry today. Conscious Sedation is one of the most successful techniques available for dealing with this apprehension, not only in dentistry but in many other medical situations that cause anxiety and fear.
Q 3. Conscious Sedation is safe ?
Yes, Conscious Sedation is completely safe. Since its discovery more than 170 years ago, nitrous oxide (N2O) has been used to provide pain and anxiety relief for patients undergoing surgical procedures with a remarkable safety record. To date, there is no evidence of any mortality associated with N2O/O2 sedation in a dental office when used solely and appropriately.
Q 4. What is PISS ?
Pin Index Safety System (PISS): A precise configuration of pins and holes that facilitate the connection between N2O and O2 gas cylinders to prevent accidental interchange.
Q 5. What is DISS ?
A system of standardized connections with different diameters exists between N2O and O2 regulators & pipes connectors to prevent accidental interchange.
Q 6. Oxygen Fail safety System ?
The most important safety feature of the unit is the O2 fail-safe mechanism. It ensures that N2O will not be delivered unless there is O2 flowing to the machine. Because of this feature, the possibility of administering 100% N2O to a patient has been eliminated

Q 8. Is a pulse oximeter necessary for N2O/O2 sedation?
No, not if it is given in concentrations less than 50%. At concentrations greater than 50%, it is recommended to monitor the patient with a pulse oximeter, because these concentrations result in the level of moderate sedation.
Q 9. Do all people experience the same signs and symptoms during N2O/O2 sedation?
No, there are signs and symptoms common to many people such as tingling or feeling light or heavy, but patients react individually to this drug. The goal for all patients is to become relaxed and comfortable.
Q 10. What are the Signs and Symptoms of Appropriate N2O/O2 Sedation ?
Patient is comfortable and relaxed, acknowledges reduced fear and anxiety, aware of surroundings, responds to directions and conversation. Eyes become less active and glazed look appears. Patient may experience: Tingling in extremities and/or near mouth, Heaviness in legs and arms, Body warmth, Light feeling Vasodilation in face and neck, numbness.
